My itchy scalp finally found lasting relief with this gentle, effective shampoo alternative that outperforms others.
After years of scalp sensitivity and itch, this shampoo is my true relief. It outperforms others like T-Gel, is gentle yet effective, and its smart foaming prevents me from using too much. Finally, lasting comfort!
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
DHS Tar Shampoo, 8 Fluid Ounce

It’s a great replacement for the Neutrogena T-Gel extra strength. Doesn’t smell as good but not bad either. Works better than most. I have a sensitive scalp and itchy. This one works great. Been using it for three weeks, no issues. Others start issues within five days. This one foams more than the T-Gel but fizzles out quickly. I think that keeps me from using as much. Still working out the amount to use.
But I’ll keep buying this one. Glad for an alternative.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Scalp Sensitivity and Shampoo Solutions
Scalp sensitivity manifests as itching, redness, tightness, or flaking, often triggered by harsh surfactants (cleansing agents), fragrances, preservatives, or environmental factors. A shampoo formulated for sensitive scalps typically avoids common irritants like sulfates (SLS/SLES), strong synthetic fragrances, and parabens, focusing instead on milder cleansing agents and soothing ingredients like aloe vera, oat extract, or allantoin.
Itch Relief Mechanisms
Itchy scalps can result from dryness, inflammation (seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis), or reactions. Effective shampoos target this by: 1) Reducing inflammation using ingredients like zinc pyrithione (anti-fungal/anti-inflammatory), salicylic acid (exfoliating), or coal tar (slows skin cell growth). 2) Restoring moisture barriers with panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) or glycerin. 3) Calming nerve responses with ingredients like menthol or pramoxine hydrochloride (in some medicated versions). The reviewed shampoo likely incorporates anti-inflammatory and barrier-supporting agents.
Foaming Agents and Usage
Shampoo lather is primarily created by surfactants. Sulfates (e.g., Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) create abundant, persistent foam but can be stripping. Milder alternatives (e.g., Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside) produce less dense, quicker-dissipating foam, as described. This isn't an indicator of cleansing power! In fact, lower foam often signals gentler cleansing, which benefits sensitive scalps and can prevent overuse, conserving product.
Finding Alternatives & Patch Testing
Switching shampoos, like moving from Neutrogena T/Gel (coal tar-based), requires finding comparable efficacy with better tolerance. Key is identifying the active need (e.g., dandruff control, psoriasis relief). Always patch test new shampoos: apply a small amount behind the ear or inner elbow for 48 hours to check for reactions before full scalp use.
Common Shampoo Questions
* How often should I wash a sensitive scalp? Aim for 2-3 times weekly; overwashing strips natural oils, worsening dryness/itch. * Can water temperature affect sensitivity? Yes! Hot water exacerbates dryness and inflammation. Use lukewarm water. * Do I need a separate conditioner? Often yes, especially with medicated shampoos which can be drying. Apply conditioner only to mid-lengths/ends. * What's "product buildup"? Accumulation of shampoo/conditioner/styling product residue, causing itch/flakes. Clarifying shampoos (used monthly) can help, but choose gentle formulas. * When to see a dermatologist? If over-the-counter shampoos fail after consistent use (4-6 weeks), severe flaking, redness, pain, or hair loss occurs.
