I found this shampoo makes hair soft and silky, filling porosity after bleaching.
This protein shampoo left my hair soft and silky after bleaching. It reduced damage, filled porosity, and my hair floated in water. I appreciate the silicone-free formula for healthy hair.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
Nexxus Bond Repair Shampoo & Conditioner Bundle Amino Bond 2 Pack for All Types of Damaged Hair, with Keratin Protein and Amino Acids, 13.5 oz,

I’ve tried a couple of different protein hair products and this is the only one that left my hair soft and silky. I did a couple of bleach washes to lift dark brown dye and wanted to be sure to minimize damage and fill in porosity. I think this shampoo and conditioner did that. I dropped a couple of strands of hair into a glass of water and they never sank! Plus no silicones. The spray on product does have silicones, so I didn’t buy it, but very happily with shampoo and conditioner.
Updating my previous review. It turns out that the conditioner has silicone after all. One is water soluble, but the other isn’t. For those of us looking for silicone-free, only the shampoo is silicone free.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
What Are Protein Hair Products?
Protein hair products contain ingredients like keratin, hydrolyzed wheat, or silk proteins that help repair damaged hair by reinforcing the hair shaft. They fill in gaps caused by chemical treatments, heat styling, or environmental factors, making hair stronger, smoother, and less prone to breakage. Proteins bind to the hair cuticle, restoring elasticity and reducing frizz, which is especially beneficial for bleached or color-treated hair that has lost its natural protein structure.
How Bleaching Affects Hair
Bleaching involves using chemicals like hydrogen peroxide to lighten hair color by breaking down melanin. This process strips away natural oils and proteins, leading to dryness, brittleness, and increased porosity. Bleached hair often feels rough and looks dull because the cuticle layer is lifted, allowing moisture to escape easily. Over-bleaching can cause severe damage, including split ends and hair loss, so it's crucial to use protective products like protein-based shampoos to minimize harm and restore health.
Understanding Hair Porosity
Hair porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture, determined by the condition of the cuticle layer. Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles, making it resistant to moisture, while high porosity hair has raised or damaged cuticles that absorb too much water but lose it quickly, leading to dryness and frizz. Factors like genetics, chemical treatments, and heat styling affect porosity. Filling porosity, as mentioned in the review, involves using products with proteins or emollients to seal the cuticle, improving moisture balance and shine.
The Hair Float Test for Porosity
The hair float test is a simple DIY method to assess porosity: drop a clean strand of hair into a glass of water. If it floats, it indicates low porosity; if it sinks slowly, it's normal porosity; and if it sinks quickly, it suggests high porosity. In the review, the hair didn't sink, which could mean the product helped reduce porosity by sealing the cuticle, or it might indicate low porosity hair. This test isn't always accurate due to variables like product buildup or hair density, but it's a useful starting point for tailoring hair care routines.
Silicones in Hair Care: Pros and Cons
Silicones are synthetic polymers used in hair products to coat the hair shaft, providing instant smoothness, shine, and frizz control by filling in surface irregularities. Common types include dimethicone and cyclomethicone. However, they can build up over time, weighing hair down, blocking moisture, and requiring clarifying shampoos to remove. This buildup may lead to dullness and reduced effectiveness of treatments. While silicones protect against heat and environmental damage, many people prefer silicone-free options to avoid accumulation and maintain natural hair health, as highlighted in the review where the user avoided silicones for a cleaner routine.
Water-Soluble vs. Non-Water-Soluble Silicones
Water-soluble silicones, like dimethicone copolyol, dissolve in water and are easier to wash out, reducing buildup. They're often used in lightweight products for fine hair. Non-water-soluble silicones, such as dimethicone, form a durable coating but can accumulate, requiring sulfate-based shampoos for removal. In the review, the conditioner contained both types, with one being water-soluble and the other not, emphasizing the importance of reading labels for those seeking truly silicone-free products. This distinction helps users choose based on their hair type and cleaning preferences.
Benefits of Silicone-Free Shampoos
Silicone-free shampoos avoid synthetic coatings, allowing hair to breathe, absorb nutrients better, and maintain its natural texture. They're ideal for people with fine, oily, or easily weighed-down hair, as they prevent buildup that can cause flatness and greasiness. These shampoos often use natural alternatives like plant oils or butters to moisturize, promoting long-term health without compromising shine. For those with sensitivities or a focus on organic care, silicone-free options reduce the risk of irritation and support sustainable practices, as seen in the review where the user prioritized a silicone-free shampoo for better results.
Common Hair Care Questions and Tips
How often should I use protein treatments? For damaged hair, once a week is sufficient; overuse can make hair brittle. Always follow with a moisturizing conditioner to balance protein and moisture. What's the best way to minimize bleach damage? Use deep conditioning masks, avoid heat tools, and incorporate UV protection. Can I mix silicone and silicone-free products? Yes, but be mindful of buildup; clarify regularly. How do I choose the right shampoo? Consider your hair type and concerns—for example, protein shampoos suit damaged hair, while sulfate-free options are gentler. Daily habits like gentle brushing and avoiding hot water can also preserve hair health.
