This shampoo helps my folliculitis by reducing scalp bumps and scabs effectively, and it outperforms clindamycin, providing immense relief despite the smell.

My Folliculitis Shampoo Relief for Scalp

I will write out what my opinions on the good and bad.

The bad, first:

This shampoo is expensive.. and you have to use a good bit because it doesn’t lather that good. And wow! The smell is terrible to me; it smells like a chemical. So if I use it in the shower, I’ll wash my hair first, THEN my body because I don’t want to smell like this shampoo.

Now on to the good:

I will say it works extremely well for folliculitis.. it got rid of most all the scabs and bumps on my scalp, so I’m suffering a lot less than I was before. In my opinion, it works better than the clindamycin topical that I was prescribed. I’ve used it 3 times in the past 2 weeks and I’ve only got 1 bump on my scalp that I can feel.. which is a vast improvement to where I was.

Final thoughts:

If you have folliculitis and you are tired of the bumps on your scalp, then deal with the smell 1-3 times per week. This shampoo does what it’s supposed to do.

Shampoo Basics & Tips

What is Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is a common skin condition where hair follicles become inflamed, often due to bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. It can cause red bumps, pustules, scabs, and itching on the scalp or other body parts. In the review, the user mentions folliculitis on the scalp, which led to scabs and bumps. This condition can be uncomfortable and may require medicated treatments to reduce inflammation and prevent infection. Factors like poor hygiene, sweat, or using harsh hair products can exacerbate it, but specialized shampoos with antibacterial ingredients can help manage symptoms effectively.

How Shampoo Can Help with Folliculitis

Shampoos designed for folliculitis often contain active ingredients like salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or ketoconazole, which target bacteria or fungi causing the inflammation. These components help exfoliate dead skin cells, reduce redness, and prevent further breakouts. In the review, the shampoo worked well for folliculitis by eliminating most scabs and bumps, indicating it likely has such medicinal properties. Regular use can improve scalp health by cleansing deeply and promoting healing, though it might not lather heavily due to fewer surfactants, which is common in therapeutic shampoos to avoid irritation.

Understanding Clindamycin Topical

Clindamycin topical is a prescription antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including folliculitis, by inhibiting bacterial growth. It's applied directly to the skin to reduce inflammation and clear up bumps. The reviewer compared the shampoo to clindamycin, noting it worked better, which suggests the shampoo might have a broader or more gentle approach. While clindamycin is effective, it can cause side effects like dryness or resistance with long-term use, making OTC alternatives like this shampoo appealing for sustained management without a prescription.

The Importance of Lather in Shampoo

Lather refers to the foam produced when shampoo mixes with water, often from surfactants that help spread the product and remove dirt and oil. However, not all shampoos lather well; medicated ones might have fewer foaming agents to avoid stripping natural oils or causing irritation. In the review, the user noted poor lather, which could be due to gentle formulations focused on treatment rather than cleansing. For scalp health, less lather doesn't mean less effectiveness—it might indicate a concentrate that requires more product for coverage but delivers better results for conditions like folliculitis.

Dealing with Shampoo Smell

The smell of shampoo comes from fragrances or natural ingredients, and a chemical odor, as mentioned in the review, might stem from preservatives or active compounds like sulfur or zinc, which are common in therapeutic shampoos. While unpleasant, this smell often signifies potent ingredients that target issues like folliculitis. To cope, users can rinse thoroughly or use conditioner afterward. It's a trade-off for effectiveness, and over time, one might get used to it, especially if the benefits outweigh the discomfort.

Common Scalp Issues and Treatments

Beyond folliculitis, other scalp problems include dandruff, psoriasis, and eczema, which cause flaking, itching, or bumps. Shampoos with ingredients like pyrithione zinc or coal tar can address these by reducing fungus or inflammation. For general care, using lukewarm water, avoiding overwashing, and choosing pH-balanced products can maintain scalp health. If issues persist, consulting a dermatologist is wise, as self-treatment might not suit all conditions.

Tips for Using Shampoo Effectively

To maximize shampoo benefits, apply it to wet hair, massage gently into the scalp for a few minutes to ensure coverage, and rinse well. For folliculitis, use it 1-3 times weekly as needed, and follow with a mild conditioner if smell is a concern. Avoid harsh towels or styling products that could irritate the scalp. Remember, results may take weeks, so consistency is key, and pairing with a healthy diet and hydration can support overall hair and scalp wellness.
