LOMA Daily Shampoo 33 Ounce (Liter)

I bought this shampoo because my hair salon switched to this brand (for whatever reason), and I loved the way it smelled when the shampoo girl washed my hair. I should have been clued-in when my hairdresser had a hard time combing my hair out in preparation for the cut. (The shampoo girl did not use conditioner, but she usually doesn't.) I ordered this shampoo because I loved the fragrance and I noticed it was made from natural ingredients (sulfate-free), which is the type of products I usually use. This product turned out to be a big disappointment, because as soon as I rub it into my hair, it feels like it turns my hair into a rock. It is not very emollient in the shower, and I feel like it takes some effort to produce a lather. If I don't use conditioner after shampooing, my short hair is dry, hard, and tangled after towel drying. EDIT: The more I use this, the more I realize it is a pretty good product afterall! I changed my rating from a "1" to a "5". Yes, it is still very hard to work this up to a lather... and it does make your hair feel "hard" if you don't use a conditioner; but it gives body to my fine hair and smells delicious! I would definitely repurchase!
Shampoo Basics & Tips
What Does Sulfate-Free Mean?
Sulfate-free refers to shampoos that do not contain sulfates, which are harsh detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate. These sulfates can strip natural oils from hair and scalp, leading to dryness and irritation. Sulfate-free alternatives use milder cleansers, making them gentler and better for sensitive skin, color-treated hair, or those seeking natural products. In the review, the user appreciated this aspect for its alignment with their preference for natural ingredients.
Understanding Emollients in Shampoo
Emollients are ingredients that soften and smooth hair by filling in gaps in the hair cuticle. In the review, the user mentioned the shampoo wasn't very emollient, meaning it didn't provide much softening during use. This is common in volumizing shampoos, as heavy emollients can weigh hair down. For fine hair, a balance is key to avoid dryness while adding body.
The Importance of Lather in Shampoo
Lather is the foam produced when shampoo mixes with water, often associated with effective cleaning. However, abundant lather doesn't always equate to better cleansing; sulfate-free shampoos typically produce less lather due to gentler surfactants. The user noted it took effort to lather, which is normal for such products but can be adjusted by using more water or massaging thoroughly.
Why Conditioner is Essential
Conditioner helps detangle hair, add moisture, and seal the cuticle after shampooing. In the review, the user experienced dry, hard hair without conditioner, highlighting its role in restoring softness and manageability. For shampoos that can feel drying, a conditioner compensates by providing hydration and reducing frizz.
Caring for Fine Hair
Fine hair has a smaller diameter and can lack volume, making it prone to looking flat. Shampoos that add body, like the one in the review, work by using lightweight proteins or polymers to lift roots without buildup. Tips for fine hair include avoiding heavy products, washing regularly to prevent oiliness, and using volumizing techniques like blow-drying upside down.
