I switched to Woody's: cedar scent, great clean, little product, scalp fixed.
Post-AC reformulation, I chose Woody's shampoo. Its cedar scent delights, cleans effectively with scant product, rinses smoothly, scalp issues resolved.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
Woody's Daily Shampoo for Men - Sulfate-Free, Hydrating Hair Care, All Natural & Organic, Refreshing Scalp Cleanser Mens Shampoo, 32 fl oz

A short while back I decided to switch shampoo brands since I noticed that American Crew changed the formulation of their products that I normally use (could tell by comparing a new batch to an old one) which reduced their effectiveness and also started to cause scalp problems.
Having seen Woody’s at the professional supply stores when shopping with my ex who is a hairstylist, I decided to give it a try.
First, I find I like the cedar like scent used more than what ever the scent is that AC has switched to.
Next, I find that this shampoo does a very good job of cleaning my hair and scalp and does not require that I use a lot of the product (maybe a quarter size blob). It also rinses out nicely compared to AC and other brands I have tried.
Shortly after making the switch, the scalp problem I had cleared up and has not returned.
If you have scalp issues with most shampoos and want to see if Woody’s will help, I suggest trying a small bottle first rather than the larger one in case you still have problems with it.
Overall, Woody’s is now going to be my regular shampoo .... at least until their reformulate it like most brands do at some point in time (especially if the company is bought by a bigger one).
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Shampoo Formulation Changes
Shampoo formulations often change due to factors like cost reduction, regulatory updates, or corporate acquisitions, which can alter product effectiveness. In the review, the user noticed American Crew's reformulation led to reduced performance and scalp problems. Formulations typically include surfactants for cleaning, conditioners for softness, and preservatives for shelf life. Changes might introduce harsh chemicals like sulfates that strip natural oils, causing dryness or irritation. To avoid issues, check ingredient lists for familiar components and consider brands that emphasize transparency and consistency.
Dealing with Scalp Problems from Shampoos
Scalp issues, such as itching, flaking, or sensitivity, can result from allergic reactions to ingredients like fragrances or preservatives, or from overly aggressive cleansers. In this case, switching to Woody's shampoo resolved the user's scalp problems, likely due to its gentler formulation. Common scalp conditions include dandruff, often caused by yeast overgrowth, or contact dermatitis from irritants. Using shampoos with soothing ingredients like tea tree oil, salicylic acid, or natural extracts can help. Always patch-test new products and consult a dermatologist for persistent issues.
Benefits of Cedar Scent in Shampoo
The cedar scent mentioned in the review is derived from essential oils, which not only provide a pleasant aroma but may offer therapeutic benefits. Cedarwood oil is known for its calming properties and can help reduce stress, while also having mild antiseptic qualities that support scalp health. Unlike synthetic fragrances that might cause allergies, natural scents are often better for sensitive skin. In shampoos, scents enhance the user experience, making hair feel fresher and more invigorating, which can improve daily routines and overall well-being.
Efficiency in Shampoo Usage and Cleaning
The user highlighted that Woody's shampoo cleans effectively with a small amount, such as a quarter-sized blob. This efficiency stems from concentrated surfactants that lift dirt and oil without over-drying. Many shampoos require more product due to diluted formulas, but high-quality ones like Woody's use potent ingredients that lather well and penetrate hair shafts. This not only saves money but also reduces environmental waste. Effective cleaning should remove buildup without stripping natural oils, maintaining hair's moisture balance and preventing damage.
Importance of Easy Rinsing in Shampoos
Easy rinsing, as noted in the review, ensures no residue is left behind, which can weigh hair down or cause irritation. Shampoos that rinse cleanly often contain water-soluble ingredients and avoid heavy silicones or waxes. Residue buildup can lead to dullness, itchiness, or even hair loss over time. To test rinsability, run fingers through hair after washing—if it feels slippery or sticky, it might not be rinsing well. Brands like Woody's prioritize this feature for a refreshed feel and healthier scalp.
Tips for Trying New Shampoos
The reviewer suggested starting with a small bottle to test for compatibility, which is a smart approach to avoid waste and adverse reactions. When switching shampoos, consider your hair type (e.g., oily, dry, curly) and scalp condition. Look for products free from parabens, sulfates, and artificial colors if you have sensitivities. It can take 2-4 weeks to see full results, as your scalp adjusts. Additionally, rotate shampoos occasionally to prevent buildup and maintain hair health. Always read reviews and ingredient labels to make informed choices.
General Shampoo Knowledge and Common Questions
Shampoos are designed to clean hair and scalp by removing dirt, oil, and product buildup. Key ingredients include surfactants (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate) for lathering, conditioning agents for softness, and pH balancers to match the scalp's natural acidity (around 5.5). Common questions include how often to shampoo—typically 2-3 times a week for most hair types, though it varies based on activity and oil production. Over-washing can strip oils, leading to dryness, while under-washing may cause clogged follicles. Choosing the right shampoo involves considering factors like hair texture, scalp health, and environmental exposures.
