Avalon Organics Therapy Scalp Normalizing Shampoo, Tea Tree Mint, 14 Oz

This is great shampoo especially for people with itchy scalps. It "calms" the scalp as you scrub and does not seem to strip the hair. I think it is very good at curing and controlling dandruff, which I have developed inside my ears and around the hairline behind one ear. After using this shampoo just once I experienced an improvement with both my ears and hair. Feeling encouraged, I went to the drugstore and purchased Lotrimin Ultra, applied a dab to the end of a q-tip and gently placed it in my ear. Now, I am finally getting some relief. I believe the shampoo is helping as much as the Lotrimin Ultra.
In addition after I shampoo with Avalon Organics Tea Tree Mint, I use a couple drops of Wen conditioner which I leave in my hair. Before discovering Avalon Shampoo, I had been using Wen Tea Tree which did not work for me nearly as well as this Avalon Tea Tree. Although Wen did restore the quality of my hair, and I'm not sure if the Avalon could do likewise. But with my hair being in pretty good shape using Avalon followed by a drop of Wen is working out great. I now see the light at the end of the tunnel in curing the dandruff in my ears. Really like this shampoo!
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Itchy Scalp and Dandruff
An itchy scalp and dandruff are common issues often caused by factors like fungal infections (e.g., Malassezia yeast), dry skin, or product buildup. In the review, the user mentions dandruff in ears and hairline, which can occur due to sebum buildup or fungal spread. Dandruff isn't just on the scalp; it can affect areas with hair follicles, leading to flakes and irritation. Regular shampooing with anti-dandruff ingredients helps control this by reducing oil and microbes.
Benefits of Tea Tree Oil in Shampoo
Tea tree oil, derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, is known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In Avalon Organics Tea Tree Mint Shampoo, it helps calm the scalp by fighting fungi and bacteria that cause itchiness and dandruff. Studies show tea tree oil can reduce dandruff severity by up to 41% with regular use. Its minty addition provides a cooling sensation, enhancing the soothing effect described in the review.
Why Some Shampoos Don't Strip Hair
Stripping hair refers to shampoos that remove natural oils, leading to dryness and damage. Avalon's formula likely uses gentle surfactants and natural ingredients that cleanse without over-drying. This preserves the hair's moisture barrier, making it ideal for sensitive scalps. Look for sulfate-free options to avoid stripping, as they maintain hair health and shine.
Dealing with Dandruff in Ears and Hairline
Dandruff can extend to ears and hairline due to similar skin conditions on the scalp. These areas have oil glands and hair follicles prone to flaking. The user combined shampoo with Lotrimin Ultra, an antifungal cream containing butenafine, which targets fungal causes. For ear dandruff, gentle cleaning with medicated products and avoiding irritants can help. Always consult a doctor for persistent issues.
The Role of Conditioners Like Wen
Conditioners, such as Wen, help moisturize and detangle hair after shampooing. Leaving a couple drops in, as the user did, can provide ongoing hydration and protection. Wen's formula often includes natural oils that complement shampoos like Avalon, enhancing hair quality without weighing it down. This combination prevents dryness and maintains manageability.
Comparing Shampoos: Avalon vs. Wen
Based on the review, Avalon Tea Tree Mint Shampoo was more effective for dandruff control than Wen Tea Tree Shampoo. Avalon's focus on organic ingredients and tea tree oil may offer stronger antifungal benefits, while Wen emphasizes hair restoration. Choosing between them depends on needs: Avalon for scalp health, Wen for overall hair quality. Many users find layering products optimal.
Tips for Scalp Care and Dandruff Prevention
To maintain a healthy scalp, wash hair regularly with anti-dandruff shampoos, avoid harsh chemicals, and use a balanced diet rich in zinc and B vitamins. For itchy scalps, try cool water rinses and limit heat styling. If dandruff persists, rotate shampoos with different active ingredients (e.g., ketoconazole or selenium sulfide) to prevent resistance. Always patch-test new products to avoid reactions.
