I love how this sulfate-free shampoo leaves my hair soft and shiny with minimal scalp irritation.
By using Aveeno ACV shampoo twice weekly with added tea tree oil, I enjoy softer hair, less dandruff, and a healthier scalp without harsh chemicals.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
Aveeno Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying Shampoo, Shine Enhancing, 12 fl oz
I wanted a shampoo that doesn't contain PHTHALATES.They are a series of widely used chemicals that are demonstrated to be endocrine disruptors and are detrimental to human health. They've been associated with reduced testosterone production in men.
I wanted a shampoo that doesn't have SULFATES to avoid extra scalp drying from frequent usage. I wanted a shampoo that doesn't contain PARABENS, a mild estrogen disruptor with concerning environmental effects.
The first ingredient in this product is Oatmeal, it's demonstrated to be soothing when used topically on skin. I have found that to be true when using Aveeno oatmeal based shaving cream on my beard.
I like that this product contains apple cider vinegar but it is not stated to contain Vinegars live MOTHER. It provides stronger antimicrobial action, it probably doesn't contain it.
So without all these unwanted chemicals does it work?
I found it removes unwanted oiliness from my hair, but only when used a couple times a week at most. This minimizes an unwanted dry scalp, and the reactive overproduction of oil, thats commonly produced by skin, in its effort to compensate for the unnatural drying effect, when using ACV too frequently.
To PROACTIVELY compensate for this drying effect, I ADD 14 drops of TEA TREE OIL , and 2 teaspoons of additional ORGANIC ACV that contains its MOTHER'S live bacteria, to the STOCK Aveeno ACV shampoo. The TEA TREE oil moisturizes the scalp, helping to offset the undesirable scalp and hair drying effects caused by the extra ACV. The added organic ACV w/MOTHER provides enhanced hair clarification, and provides antimicrobial topical skin benefits. They are BOTH anti-inflammatory!
After washing using the custom ENHANCED ACV shampoo. I have experienced good results by using a small application of Acure orange and watermelon conditioner.
I also use Acure orange and watermelon shampoo All other days, because it has a similar, bad chemical free formula. I have found Acure shampoo is lightly naturally scented, gentle, and doesn't dry out my scalp. It can be used daily without causing unwanted scalp irritation.
Aveeno ACV produces very little to no lather unless you rinse and repeat, but it's still minimal. Acure shampoo shares this same characteristic. It's probably a byproduct of the same missing chemicals not used in both products.
After using my MODIFIED Aveeno ACV twice a week, and Acure Orange & Watermelon shampoo all the other days, and both always followed with just a little bit of Acure orange and watermelon conditioner everyday for a year, It leaves my hair manageable, soft and shiny for a couple of days. Additionally my scalp condition has improved with less irritation and minimal dandruff.
This combination works for me! Because everyone's HAIR, SKIN and ENVIRONMENT are SO DIFFERENT, your results WILL vary. I recommend giving these products a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the results. It potentially may work for you as well!
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Harmful Chemicals in Shampoo
PHTHALATES are synthetic chemicals often used as plasticizers in personal care products to enhance flexibility and fragrance retention. They are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormone systems, potentially reducing testosterone production in men and leading to reproductive issues. Avoiding phthalate-free shampoos helps minimize exposure to these health risks.
The Problem with SULFATES
SULFATES, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), are surfactants that create lather in shampoos but can strip natural oils from the scalp. This over-drying effect may cause irritation, increased oil production as the scalp compensates, and exacerbate conditions like dandruff. Sulfate-free shampoos, like the one reviewed, provide a gentler cleanse suitable for frequent use.
Why PARABENS Are Concerning
PARABENS are preservatives used to prevent microbial growth in cosmetics. They mimic estrogen in the body, raising concerns about hormonal disruption and environmental persistence. Choosing paraben-free products reduces potential long-term health impacts and supports eco-friendly practices.
Benefits of Oatmeal in Haircare
Oatmeal, as the first ingredient in this shampoo, has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties when applied topically. It can calm irritated skin, reduce itching, and moisturize the scalp, making it ideal for those with sensitivity or conditions like eczema.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) and Its "Mother"
Apple cider vinegar is valued for its clarifying and antimicrobial properties, helping to balance scalp pH and remove buildup. The "MOTHER" refers to the cloudy substance in unfiltered ACV containing beneficial bacteria and enzymes, which enhance its efficacy. While the reviewed shampoo includes ACV, adding organic ACV with mother can boost these benefits.
Tea Tree Oil for Scalp Health
Tea tree oil is a natural essential oil with antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. When added to shampoo, it moisturizes the scalp, reduces dandruff, and soothes irritation, complementing ACV's effects without over-drying.
Customizing Shampoo for Personalized Care
Mixing additives like tea tree oil or ACV into stock shampoo allows for tailored haircare. This approach addresses individual needs, such as oil control or scalp sensitivity, but requires caution to avoid overuse that could lead to dryness.
Daily Shampooing and Scalp Care
Frequent shampooing with harsh products can disrupt the scalp's natural balance. Alternatives like gentle, sulfate-free formulas or co-washing (using conditioner only) help maintain moisture. It's recommended to wash hair based on your hair type—oily hair may need more frequent cleansing, while dry hair benefits from less.
Common Shampoo Ingredients to Avoid
Beyond phthalates, sulfates, and parabens, watch for formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and alcohols that can dry hair. Opting for natural ingredients like those in Aveeno and Acure products promotes healthier hair and scalp.
Tips for Choosing the Right Shampoo
Consider your hair type (e.g., oily, dry, color-treated) and scalp condition when selecting a shampoo. Look for certifications like "organic" or "cruelty-free," and patch-test new products to avoid reactions. Reading reviews, like this one, can provide real-world insights into effectiveness.
Addressing Dandruff and Scalp Irritation
Dandruff often results from fungal overgrowth or dryness. Using anti-inflammatory ingredients like tea tree oil or ACV can help. Regular moisturizing and avoiding hot water during washes also reduce flakiness and irritation.
Environmental Impact of Shampoo Choices
Eco-friendly shampoos minimize water pollution and packaging waste. Biodegradable formulas and refillable containers are sustainable options. The shift toward chemical-free products, as highlighted in the review, supports broader environmental health.
