Fanola No Yellow Shampoo 11.8oz / 2pk - Color Depositing Purple Shampoo for Blonde, Silver, Gray, and Highlighted Hair - Anti Brass Shampoo Toner to Remove Yellow Tones & Brassiness from Bleached Hair

I will never use another purple shampoo ever again!! I have heavily highlighted hair and this stuff does the trick for getting rid of brassy shades. Once a week I wet my hair, apply the shampoo and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes prior to rinsing and conditioning. After 1 use the tone is very noticeable. It gives my highlights an ashy tone which is exactly what I want. There’s no yellow! This shampoo is super pigmented so I would recommend wearing gloves and avoid using near light colored linens. It doesn’t affect my natural hair color, just the highlights. I can’t recommend this product enough for blondes wanting to rid themselves of yellow tones.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
What is Purple Shampoo?
Purple shampoo is a specialized hair care product designed for individuals with blonde, silver, or highlighted hair. It contains purple pigments that help neutralize unwanted brassy or yellow tones. This type of shampoo works by depositing a slight purple hue onto the hair, which counteracts warm shades based on color theory principles. It's particularly beneficial for those with chemically treated hair, as it maintains a cool, ashy appearance without the need for frequent salon visits. Purple shampoo is often used as part of a regular hair maintenance routine to extend the life of color-treated hair and keep it looking fresh and vibrant.
How Does Purple Shampoo Work?
Purple shampoo operates on the color wheel concept in hair care. On the color wheel, purple is directly opposite yellow, meaning they are complementary colors that cancel each other out. When applied to hair, the purple pigments in the shampoo neutralize yellow and orange brassy tones, resulting in a cooler, more balanced shade. This is especially effective for blonde or lightened hair, which tends to develop warmth over time due to factors like sun exposure, hard water, or product buildup. The shampoo's pigments are temporary and wash out gradually, allowing for customizable toning based on how long it's left on the hair. For best results, it should be used consistently but not overused to avoid over-toning, which can lead to a purple or gray cast.
Benefits for Highlighted Hair
For people with highlighted hair, purple shampoo offers targeted toning that focuses on the lightened sections without affecting the natural hair color. Highlights are often more porous and prone to brassiness because the bleaching process opens up the hair cuticle, making it susceptible to environmental factors. Purple shampoo helps restore a uniform, ashy tone by depositing color only where needed, as highlighted in the user's experience. This can enhance the dimensional look of highlights, reduce the appearance of yellowing, and prolong the vibrancy of salon treatments. Additionally, it can save time and money by reducing the frequency of professional toning services, making it a cost-effective solution for maintaining blonde hair at home.
How to Use Purple Shampoo Effectively
To use purple shampoo effectively, start by wetting your hair thoroughly. Apply a generous amount of the shampoo, focusing on the areas with highlights or brassiness. Massage it into a lather and let it sit for 5-20 minutes, depending on the desired intensity—longer times provide stronger toning. Then, rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the hair cuticle and follow up with a conditioner to prevent dryness, as purple shampoo can be slightly drying due to its pigments. It's recommended to use it once a week or as needed, but avoid daily use to prevent over-toning. For added protection, wear gloves during application to avoid staining hands and keep it away from light-colored surfaces to prevent discoloration. Always do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin or are trying a new product.
Common Questions About Purple Shampoo
Many users wonder how often to use purple shampoo; generally, once a week is sufficient, but this can vary based on hair porosity and desired tone. Overuse may lead to a purple tint, so it's best to start with less and adjust as needed. Another common question is whether it works on all hair types—while it's primarily for light-colored hair, those with dark hair won't see significant effects. People also ask about potential side effects; purple shampoo is safe for most, but it can cause dryness, so using a moisturizing conditioner afterward is key. Additionally, it's important to note that results can vary based on hair condition and water quality. For instance, hard water might reduce effectiveness, so consider using a clarifying shampoo occasionally to remove mineral buildup. Lastly, always store purple shampoo in a cool, dry place to maintain its pigmentation and efficacy.
Additional Hair Care Tips
Beyond purple shampoo, maintaining healthy blonde or highlighted hair involves a holistic approach. Use sulfate-free shampoos to preserve color and avoid stripping natural oils. Incorporate deep conditioning treatments weekly to combat dryness from chemical processes. Protect hair from UV rays by wearing hats or using products with UV filters, as sun exposure can accelerate brassiness. Also, avoid excessive heat styling and use heat protectant sprays to minimize damage. Regular trims every 6-8 weeks help prevent split ends and keep hair looking fresh. For those with hard water, installing a shower filter can reduce mineral deposits that contribute to discoloration. Remember, a balanced diet rich in vitamins and proteins supports hair health from within, promoting shine and strength.
