This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
OGX Organix Anti-Breakage Keratin Oil Shampoo, 385ml

I have always used shampoo and conditioner. Always. I don't even like using a 2 in 1 product. Little did I know it isn't necessary! OGX Keratin Oil has no SLS and I think also no dimethicone (I try to avoid both ingredients). It does not leave my hair dry, greasy, stringy, anything... I was actually amazed by it because using conditioner made my hair too greasy but usually shampoo only would leave it dry and stringy - not OGX! I would bring curious to try their conditioner but I refuse to because it contains dimethicone. Also, some other formulations of their shampoo contain dimethicone so watch out if you want to avoid it. If wasn't in love with the scent but I didn't hate it - just a nice scent but nothing special.
Key Points:
1. Works so well you don't/may not need conditioner (even washing 2x)!
2. VERY thick almost jelly like. Not a good thing or a bad thing just unusual.
3. No SLS but still lathers nicely!
Shampoo Basics & Tips
What is SLS?
SLS, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, is a common surfactant used in shampoos and other personal care products to create lather and remove dirt and oil. While effective for cleaning, it can strip natural oils from the hair and scalp, leading to dryness, irritation, or frizz for some people, especially those with sensitive skin or curly hair. Many opt for SLS-free shampoos, like OGX Keratin Oil, to maintain moisture and reduce potential damage, as they often use milder alternatives such as sodium laureth sulfate or coconut-based cleansers that still provide a satisfying foam without harsh effects.
Understanding Dimethicone
Dimethicone is a type of silicone used in hair and skincare products to add shine, smoothness, and reduce frizz by coating the hair shaft. However, it can build up over time, weighing hair down, making it look greasy, and potentially blocking moisture absorption, which may require clarifying shampoos to remove. In the review, the user avoids dimethicone due to concerns about greasiness and buildup, highlighting a trend toward silicone-free products for natural hair health. Alternatives like plant-based oils can offer similar benefits without residue.
Benefits of Keratin Oil
Keratin is a protein naturally found in hair, skin, and nails, and keratin oil in shampoos helps strengthen, repair, and smooth damaged hair by filling in gaps in the hair cuticle. This can reduce breakage, enhance shine, and improve manageability, making hair look healthier and less prone to tangles. In OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo, it likely contributes to the user's experience of soft, non-stringy hair without conditioner, as it provides conditioning effects internally, reducing the need for additional products.
Why You Might Not Need Conditioner
Conditioners are typically used to add moisture, detangle, and protect hair after shampooing, but some shampoos, like OGX Keratin Oil, are formulated to be nourishing enough on their own. This can be due to ingredients like keratin oil, which impart softness and strength, or the absence of harsh detergents that strip natural oils. Factors such as hair type (e.g., fine or oily hair) and washing frequency play a role; for instance, overwashing with conditioner can lead to greasiness. The review shows how a balanced shampoo can eliminate the extra step, saving time and reducing product buildup.
Shampoo Texture and Lather
Shampoo texture, such as the thick, jelly-like consistency mentioned, affects application and performance. Thicker formulas often contain higher concentrations of active ingredients or emulsifiers, which can provide better coverage and cleansing without dilution. Despite being SLS-free, OGX Keratin Oil lathers nicely because it uses alternative surfactants that create foam without sulfates, ensuring a thorough clean without compromising hair health. This demonstrates that lather isn't solely dependent on SLS and can be achieved with gentle ingredients.
Common Shampoo Questions and Tips
How often should you wash your hair? It depends on hair type and lifestyle; for example, oily hair may need daily washing, while dry or curly hair benefits from less frequent washes to retain natural oils. Always choose shampoos based on your hair's needs, such as SLS-free options for sensitivity or keratin-infused ones for damage repair. Avoid overwashing, which can lead to dryness, and consider alternating with co-washing (using conditioner only) for balance. Additionally, patch-test new products to check for allergies, and store shampoos in a cool, dry place to maintain efficacy.
