I love how this shampoo bar makes my hair soft, clean, and full with a wonderful scent.
This shampoo bar left my hair super soft, clean, and fuller with a lovely fragrance; however, it lacks durability and may fade color, so I'll repurchase but experiment with different types.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
Kitsch Rosemary & Biotin Shampoo and Conditioner Bar Set for Thinning Hair - Volume Shampoo & Conditioner Bar for Men and Women, Hair Thickening & Regrowth Combo, Paraben Free, Made in USA - 2pcs

The pros of these shampoo / conditioner bars - they left my hair super soft and so clean, that my hair felt lighter and fuller. They smell wonderful! I have not been using long enough to know if they help with hair growth yet, but I was very satisfied with the condition of my hair, even after the first use.
The cons of these bars - They do not last long. I do have long hair, but the description says up to 100 shampoos. I'm thinking I may get 30 - 40. The other con is that even though they say color safe, they are definitely harder on my color than regular shampoo / conditioner. If I continue to use them, I will definitely have to get my hair colored more often.
I will probably buy them again, but maybe try a different formula to see it strips my color less.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
What Are Shampoo Bars?
Shampoo bars are solid, concentrated forms of shampoo that often come in bar shapes, similar to soap. They are typically made with natural ingredients like oils, butters, and surfactants to cleanse hair without the need for liquid formulations. These bars are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendly benefits, such as reduced plastic packaging and lower carbon footprint during transportation. Many people choose them for travel or zero-waste lifestyles, as they are compact and long-lasting when used correctly. However, as noted in the review, actual durability can vary based on hair length and usage habits.
Benefits of Shampoo Bars for Hair Softness and Cleanliness
Shampoo bars are designed to cleanse hair effectively while maintaining moisture balance. Ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, or argan oil can contribute to softness by coating hair strands and reducing friction. The review mentions hair feeling "super soft and so clean," which is often due to gentle surfactants that remove dirt and oil without stripping natural oils. This can make hair feel lighter and fuller, as buildup is minimized. Additionally, many bars include conditioners that smooth the hair cuticle, enhancing shine and manageability. For those with fine or thin hair, this can create a voluminous appearance without weighing hair down.
Understanding Hair Lightness and Fullness from Shampoo Bars
When hair feels "lighter and fuller" after using a shampoo bar, it's typically because the product cleanses without leaving heavy residues. Traditional liquid shampoos might contain silicones or other additives that coat hair, potentially making it feel weighed down. In contrast, shampoo bars often use natural cleansers that provide a deep clean, allowing hair to bounce back with more body. This effect is enhanced by ingredients like clay or herbal extracts that add volume. However, individual results can vary based on hair type—for example, those with oily hair might experience more lightness, while dry hair may need additional conditioning.
The Role of Scent in Shampoo Bars
The wonderful scent mentioned in the review is usually derived from essential oils or natural fragrances added to shampoo bars. Scents like lavender, citrus, or floral notes can enhance the user experience by providing aromatherapy benefits, such as relaxation or invigoration. Unlike synthetic perfumes, natural scents from essential oils may offer additional properties, like antibacterial effects from tea tree oil. It's important to note that strong scents don't necessarily indicate better cleaning power, but they can make hair smell fresh for hours. For those with sensitivities, fragrance-free options are available to avoid irritation.
Durability of Shampoo Bars: Why They May Not Last as Long as Claimed
Shampoo bars are often marketed as lasting for up to 100 shampoos, but as the review points out, real-world use might only yield 30-40 washes. This discrepancy can stem from several factors: hair length and thickness (longer hair requires more product), water hardness (hard water can dissolve bars faster), and storage conditions (keeping bars dry between uses extends life). Additionally, over-rubbing the bar or using it on very dirty hair can accelerate wear. To maximize durability, users should store bars in well-drained soap dishes and avoid letting them sit in water. Comparing different brands and formulas can also help find longer-lasting options.
Color Safety in Shampoo Bars
Color-safe shampoo bars are formulated to be gentle on dyed hair, but as the review indicates, some may still cause color fading. This happens if the bar contains harsh surfactants like sulfates, which can strip dye molecules from hair shafts. Ingredients to look for in color-safe bars include mild cleansers (e.g., glucosides) and color-protecting agents like UV filters or antioxidants. It's also helpful to use cool water when washing, as hot water can open hair cuticles and release color. If a bar claims to be color-safe but still fades hair, it might be due to individual hair porosity or dye type—switching to a sulfate-free formula designed for color-treated hair could reduce this issue.
Hair Growth and Shampoo Bars: What to Expect
While the review mentions not using the product long enough to assess hair growth, it's important to clarify that shampoo bars alone are unlikely to significantly promote hair growth. Hair growth is primarily influenced by genetics, diet, and overall health, though some bars include ingredients like biotin, caffeine, or herbal extracts that may support scalp health and reduce breakage. For instance, bars with peppermint oil can stimulate blood flow to the scalp, potentially encouraging growth indirectly. However, consistent use over time is needed to see any effects, and results vary. For best growth, combine with a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minimize heat styling damage.
Tips for Choosing and Using Shampoo Bars
To get the most out of shampoo bars, consider your hair type and concerns. For color-treated hair, opt for bars labeled "sulfate-free" or "color-safe." If you have dry hair, look for bars with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter or jojoba oil. For oily hair, bars with clay or tea tree oil can help control sebum. When using, lather the bar in your hands first instead of rubbing it directly on hair to prevent overuse and breakage. Store bars in a dry place to extend their life, and pair with a conditioner bar if needed for extra softness. Experimenting with different formulas, as suggested in the review, can help find the best match for your needs.
Common Questions About Shampoo Bars
Many people wonder if shampoo bars work as well as liquid shampoos—yes, they can provide similar cleansing when formulated properly. Another common question is whether they cause buildup; most bars are rinse-off products that don't leave residues if used correctly. For those concerned about environmental impact, shampoo bars are generally more sustainable due to less packaging waste. However, they may not suit everyone—for example, people with very hard water might find bars less effective due to mineral deposits. Always read reviews and ingredient lists to avoid allergens or irritants, and give the bar a few uses to adjust, as hair might go through a "transition period" when switching from liquid shampoos.
