My Best Purple Shampoo for Removing Brassiness Fast

I absolutely love this shampoo!

The left side of the picture is my before - about 6 weeks since I’ve been to the salon - and the right side is after using Fanola No Yellow and letting it sit on my hair for just 2 minutes.

Warning - this review will be long.. I wanted to go in depth about how I used it in case you are searching for some detailed instructions like I was before I tried it out. If you don’t feel like reading it all here’s the gist of it…start out with just a couple minutes and if you still have a bit of brassiness left over, leave it on for a couple more minutes the next time. Use a good conditioner and leave that on for a bit longer than you normally do. After you get out of the shower, use some good leave-in products. If you do that, you shouldn’t notice your hair feeling dry at all. Oh, and for the reviews that commented on the smell being awful, I didn’t think it was bad at all. It didn’t bug me at all during the process, and after it being dried, my hair smells great. It smells slightly different than it normally does, but not in a bad way whatsoever.

I still have 2 more weeks until I go back to the salon to get my hair lightened even more, but the brassiness was driving me mad. My stylist suggested I try Fanola No Yellow. I read a bunch of reviews before using it and decided to leave it in my hair for just 2 minutes the first time as I didn’t want my hair to look grey or purple at all. I really didn’t expect much change the first time doing just 2 minutes, I figured I’d need to use it a few times and up the time I leave it in before I would notice a difference at all. For just one use and only leaving it in for 2 minutes, I was stunned with my results. It definitely got rid of a lot of brassiness in very little time.

The process - I first shampooed my hair in the shower with Nexxus Clean and Pure Clarifying shampoo. I then turned the shower head off and while the tub was filling up I quickly towel dried my hair just a bit. I then used the Fanola No Yellow and scrubbed it in well making sure all of my hair was saturated. I waited 2 minutes and then rinsed it out. I then coated my hair with my Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner, twisted my hair into a top knot and let it set on my hair for 10-15 minutes while I shaved and relaxed in the bath. When I got out I sprayed my Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Leave-In spray all throughout my hair from roots to ends, and put my Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother from mid-length to ends, and then my Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil just on my ends. My hair isn’t dry at all, it is extremely soft and tangle free.

The only thing I did differently than what I normally do is let the Olaplex conditioner set on my hair for 10-15 minutes instead of 5 minutes like normal. And my hair is just as soft, maybe even a bit softer, than it generally is. I know everyone’s hair is different, but for me, I didn’t find Fanola to be drying whatsoever. I use my Olaplex conditioner (and the shampoo) once a week and my Nexxus clarifying shampoo once every 3-4 weeks, and it was time for me to use those anyway so I went ahead and did that today while using the Fanola. Usually I will use the clarifying shampoo, then shampoo again with the Olaplex shampoo, and finish with Olaplex conditioner. Since I was already washing my hair twice (Nexxus and Fanola), I skipped the Olaplex shampoo because that would have been overkill to shampoo 3 times 😂

So my recommendation would be to use a clarifying shampoo first to get rid of any gunk that may be on your hair so the Fanola No Yellow can really penetrate your strands. I also recommend using a good conditioner (or hair mask even) and letting that sit on your hair for a little longer than normal. I’d also recommend using a good leave-in product afterwards.

Next time I plan on letting the No Yellow sit on my hair for 4-5 minutes and I can’t wait to see the results after that! When I get my hair lightened again, the goal is for my hair to be icy white. This shampoo will definitely come in handy to use in between salon trips (I have a balayage and go in every 10-12 weeks) to keep away the brassiness.

How Fanola No Yellow Purple Shampoo Works: A Complete Guide

Purple shampoo is a toner for blonde, gray, or bleached hair. It works because purple is opposite yellow on the color wheel. When you apply violet pigments to yellow or brassy hair, the colors cancel each other out, restoring a cool, ashy, or icy tone. Fanola No Yellow is a professional Italian hair care product formulated with Extra Violet Pigment, which provides intense color correction in just a few minutes.

Key Benefits and How to Use for Best Results

Based on my experience and the product description, here's how to get the most out of this shampoo. Start by using a clarifying shampoo (like Nexxus Clean and Pure) to remove buildup and allow the violet pigment to penetrate. Towel-dry your hair slightly, then apply Fanola No Yellow evenly. Leave it on for 1 to 5 minutes—start with 2 minutes to avoid over-toning. Rinse thoroughly, then follow with a deep conditioner or hair mask (I used Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner) for 10–15 minutes. For extra hydration, use leave-in products like Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Leave-In Spray, Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother, and Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil. This routine keeps hair soft, shiny, and tangle-free without dryness.

Why This Shampoo Stands Out for Blonde and Gray Hair

Unlike many purple shampoos that can be drying, Fanola No Yellow is designed to enhance shine and silkiness while neutralizing brassiness. The rich violet hue instantly counteracts yellow tones, making it ideal for blonde, bleached, silver, and gray hair. It delivers salon-quality results at home, preserving cool tones between color services. Fanola is a professional Italian brand committed to high-quality ingredients and inclusive beauty, with over 10 product ranges. The shampoo has over 158,000 ratings with a 4.5-star average, confirming its effectiveness.

Tips for Avoiding Dryness and Getting Optimal Results

Many users worry about dryness. The key is to pair this shampoo with a good moisturizing conditioner and leave-in products. Use a clarifying shampoo before application for better pigment absorption. Never leave the purple shampoo on for more than 5 minutes the first time—adjust based on your desired tone. For very porous or compromised hair, consider using a hair mask instead of regular conditioner. Olaplex and other bond-repair products are excellent companions. Also, use this shampoo only once or twice a week to maintain results without over-toning.

Who Should Use This Product

Fanola No Yellow is perfect for anyone with chemically treated hair (bleached, highlighted, balayage), natural blondes who want to combat brassiness, and those with gray or silver hair who want a bright, cool tone. It is suitable for both men and women. The shampoo is liquid in form with a sweet scent. While some reviews mention a strong initial smell, I found it pleasant and not bothersome after drying. The product dimensions are 2.23 x 2.23 x 8.87 inches, weight 1.28 ounces, manufactured by Fanola in Italy (model number 10006457). It is not discontinued and ranks #66 in Hair Shampoo on Amazon.

Final Thoughts

This review clearly shows that with the right technique, Fanola No Yellow delivers instant results without compromising hair health. The combination of violet pigment and proper conditioning leaves hair soft, shiny, and free from brassiness. I plan to use it every few weeks to maintain my icy blonde goal. For anyone looking for a powerful purple shampoo that actually works, Fanola No Yellow is a top choice.
