This shampoo stops my itching and flakiness while cleaning thoroughly without dryness.
After many failed attempts, this shampoo alone stops my itching and flakiness, cleans thoroughly, and I now appreciate its natural scent without added fragrances.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
DHS Tar Shampoo, 8 Fluid Ounce

It smells HORRIBLE, like burnt tires. I am willing to overlook this drawback though, and am also greatful they did not add fragrance to cover the tar smell, as I am sensitive to added fragrance. I highly recommend this shampoo because it does work. It also cleans my hair thoroughly without drying it out or leaving a film on my hair. I have tried everything for my scalp condition: Nizoral, T Sal, "natural, organic remedies", dye free, fragrance free, and zinc based shampoos. This has been the only product I've tried that has stopped the itching, reduced the flakiness and seen positive results.
Update: I have actually grown to like the smell of the shampoo, and the shampoo continues to work wonderfully. On the odd occasion that I try to use something different the itching comes right back, and I have to rewash my hair the next day, something I normally don't do.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Scalp Conditions and Shampoo Ingredients
In the review, the user mentions struggling with scalp itching and flakiness, which are common symptoms of conditions like dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff often results from an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, which can cause inflammation and flaking. Itching may stem from dryness, irritation, or underlying skin issues. The user tried various shampoos, including Nizoral, which contains ketoconazole, an antifungal agent that targets fungal causes of dandruff. T Sal shampoo includes salicylic acid, which helps exfoliate dead skin cells and reduce scaling. Zinc-based shampoos often use pyrithione zinc to combat fungal growth and soothe the scalp. Natural and organic remedies might involve ingredients like tea tree oil or aloe vera, which have antimicrobial properties, but they may not be as effective for severe cases. Fragrance-free options are crucial for those with sensitivities, as added fragrances can trigger allergies or irritation. This shampoo's ability to clean without drying or leaving a film suggests it uses gentle surfactants that maintain the hair's natural moisture balance. Overall, choosing the right shampoo depends on identifying the root cause of scalp issues and selecting products with evidence-backed ingredients.
Common Shampoo Questions and Daily Tips
Many people wonder how often to wash their hair; it varies by scalp type—oily scalps might need daily washing, while dry ones benefit from less frequent use. Always rinse thoroughly to avoid residue buildup. If you have sensitive skin, patch-test new products first. For persistent problems, consult a dermatologist to rule out conditions like psoriasis or eczema. Incorporating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can also support scalp health from within.
