I found this shampoo excellent for enhancing my red highlights, it's affordable, and doesn't stain my hair.
I highly recommend this shampoo because it effectively maintains my red color, is cost-effective, doesn't cause running or staining, and smells great, even if it slightly dries my hair ends.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
John Frieda Radiant Red, Color Boosting Shampoo, Enhances, Protects, & Hydrates with Pomegranate Extract and Vitamin E for Natural or Color-Treated Hair, 8.3 Oz

I bought three (!!) different shampoos to keep my very red highlights very red. This one, John Frieda Radiant Red Red Boosting Shampoo, is the least expensive one that I bought and, I think it is the best for revving up my red. It is thin and red in color. It washes my hair well and deposits some red on my hair. It doesn't stain or run. It has a bit of a cinnamon scent that I like. I used my usual conditioner and my hair came out nice. A tad bit dry but all of these color depositing shampoos seem to make my ends dry.
I just ordered the accompanying conditioner hoping that will add more red and help with the dryness. In all, I think this is the one I will use from now on. The others, although higher priced and salon names, didn't give me as much of a red boost. If the shampoo and conditioner don't make my hair too dry, I will use it often between salon touch ups.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
What are Color Depositing Shampoos?
Color depositing shampoos, like the John Frieda Radiant Red Red Boosting Shampoo mentioned in the review, are specialized hair care products designed to add or enhance hair color between salon visits. They contain pigments that temporarily coat the hair shaft, helping to revive faded shades, such as red highlights. These shampoos are often used for color-treated hair to prevent brassiness and maintain vibrancy. They work by depositing color molecules during washing, which can be beneficial for people with dyed hair, as frequent washing can cause color to fade quickly. However, they may lead to dryness, as noted in the review, due to the added chemicals that can strip natural oils.
Understanding Red Highlights and Hair Care
Red highlights refer to sections of hair that are dyed a reddish hue to add dimension and brightness. Maintaining red hair can be challenging because red dye molecules are larger and tend to wash out faster than other colors. Using a red-boosting shampoo helps by replenishing these pigments. In daily life, it's important to choose sulfate-free shampoos to avoid stripping color and to follow up with conditioners to combat dryness, as the reviewer did by ordering the accompanying conditioner.
Why Shampoo Texture and Color Matter
The review mentions that the shampoo is "thin and red in color." A thin consistency often indicates a formula that spreads easily and rinses out without residue, which can be better for thorough cleaning. The red color comes from added dyes that help in color deposition. This visual aspect can assure users of its effectiveness for red tones, but it's essential to check if it causes staining on skin or towels—thankfully, this product doesn't, as per the review.
Dealing with Dry Hair from Shampoos
Many color depositing shampoos can make hair dry, especially the ends, because they contain ingredients that open the hair cuticle to deposit color, which may lead to moisture loss. To address this, using a moisturizing conditioner, avoiding hot water, and limiting wash frequency can help. The reviewer's experience with dryness is common, and pairing with a conditioner is a practical solution for maintaining hair health.
Benefits of Scented Shampoos Like Cinnamon
The cinnamon scent in this shampoo adds a pleasant aroma to the hair washing experience, which can enhance user satisfaction. Scents in shampoos are often derived from essential oils or fragrances and can provide aromatherapy benefits, such as invigorating the senses. However, for those with sensitivities, it's wise to choose hypoallergenic options.
Tips for Extending Salon Touch-Ups
To reduce the frequency of salon visits for color touch-ups, using products like this shampoo can help maintain color intensity. Additional tips include protecting hair from UV rays, using color-protecting sprays, and following a healthy diet rich in vitamins to support hair strength. Always do a patch test first to avoid allergic reactions.
