This purple shampoo gently reduces brass on my brunette hair, though it works better on lighter shades. It has a subtle scent, adds shine, but can increase greasiness. I appreciate its sulfate-free, paraben-free formula for color-treated hair. Use twice aProduct Detail

My Best Purple Shampoo for Brass Removal

This is a review from Amazon.com about product:

Kristin Ess Hair The One Purple Shampoo for Toning Blonde Hair - Neutralizes Brass + Yellow Tones, Shine Restoring - Sulfate, Silicone and Paraben Free, Color + Keratin Safe, 10 fl. oz.

My Best Purple Shampoo for Brass Removal

For background I am a brunette who has dyed my hair light and darker back and forth through out the years. Now that I want to go back to my natural color, my roots are growing but the rest of my hair still has brassy streaks. I have been using this product for a few weeks and have seen some slight improvement but nothing life changing. The purple color is very vibrant and I think it would work better for blondes or lighter hair. It do not think that is has a scent or if it does, it is very subtle. I like that it does not contain any of the bad chemicals that some cheaper hair products contain. It makes my hair shiny but as someone who struggles with greasy hair, it seems like the product makes it more greasy. I usually wash once with regular shampoo and then again with the purple shampoo and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing.

Understanding Purple Shampoo for Brass Reduction

Purple shampoo uses violet pigments to neutralize yellow and orange brassy tones on lightened hair. The key is the color wheel: purple opposites yellow, so it cancels out unwanted warm hues. Kristin Ess's formula includes ultra-violet pigment for intense toning, and it's sulfate-free, which helps preserve color and moisture.

This product is designed for both blondes and brunettes with highlights or dye. For brunettes, like in the user review, the effect may be subtler because the hair base is darker. The user saw slight improvement after weeks, indicating that for medium-to-dark hair with brass, patience and consistent use are needed.

The shampoo contains no sulfates, parabens, or phthalates, making it safe for keratin-treated and color-treated hair. It's cruelty-free and scented with pear. The user noted subtle scent and no harsh chemicals, which aligns with the brand's clean stance.

One common issue is increased greasiness, as the user experienced. This can happen if purple shampoo is used too frequently or not rinsed thoroughly. The recommendation is to use it only when brass appears, or as a once-weekly treatment. Always follow with a hydrating conditioner or mask.

For best results, apply to wet hair, massage into scalp to create lather, and let sit for 2-5 minutes where brass is most concentrated (often near roots). Rinse well and condition. The user's method of washing with regular shampoo first then purple shampoo is a valid technique to prevent over-toning and reduce oil buildup.

Overall, this shampoo excels in its gentle formula and effective brass reduction for lighter hair, while offering a clean, shiny finish for all hair types. It's a solid choice for those seeking sulfate-free toning without harsh additives.
