This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
GIOVANNI Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating Shampoo - Cooling Peppermint, Eucalyptus & Rosemary, Helps Strengthen & Rejuvenate Hair & Scalp, Salon Quality, Paraben Free - 8.5 oz (1 Pack)

I bought this shampoo to try it for a dry scalp / flaking / itching problem. i was interested in it because it is natural. i was hoping it would be the cure that I have long sought. Here' s the deal...
It keeps the dry scalp under control. It lathers up nicely, which is good because some dandruff shampoos do not. There is nothing bad about the shampoo. i was just kind of hoping it would be more of a cure than continuing maintenance. But that is not the fault of the shampoo I guess, as it was never stated to be a cure afaik. I do still get flakes though, if i shake my hair I can see them falling. it sucks, I hate it.
The point is, though, that the other shampoos that have all the chemicals in them don't seem to be any better. I hear the big one to watch out for is Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Dry Scalp and Related Issues
Dry scalp is a common condition characterized by a lack of moisture on the skin of the head, leading to symptoms like flaking, itching, and irritation. It can be caused by factors such as cold weather, excessive washing, or using harsh hair products. In the review, the user mentions dry scalp along with flaking and itching, which are often interconnected. Flaking refers to the shedding of dead skin cells, similar to dandruff, but dry scalp flakes are typically smaller and less oily. Itching is a natural response to dryness or inflammation, and scratching can worsen the condition by damaging the scalp.
What is Natural Shampoo?
Natural shampoos are formulated with ingredients derived from plants, minerals, or other organic sources, avoiding synthetic chemicals like sulfates and parabens. They aim to be gentler on the scalp and hair, reducing the risk of irritation. In the review, the user preferred a natural shampoo because it aligns with a healthier lifestyle, potentially offering benefits like improved scalp hydration without side effects. Common natural ingredients include aloe vera, tea tree oil, or coconut oil, which can soothe dryness and promote hair health.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) Explained
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) is a surfactant commonly used in shampoos and cleansers to create lather and remove dirt. However, it can strip natural oils from the scalp, leading to dryness and irritation for some people. The review highlights SLS as a "big one to watch out for," reflecting concerns about its potential to exacerbate scalp issues. Alternatives like natural surfactants (e.g., from coconuts) are often recommended for sensitive scalps to maintain moisture balance.
Benefits of Lathering in Shampoos
Lathering refers to the foam produced when shampoo is mixed with water, which helps distribute the product evenly and cleanse the scalp. The review notes that this shampoo "lathers up nicely," which is important for user satisfaction as poor lathering can make washing feel ineffective. However, excessive lathering from sulfates like SLS might not always indicate better cleaning and could contribute to dryness.
Managing Scalp Conditions: Cure vs. Maintenance
Many users, like the reviewer, hope for a "cure" that permanently resolves scalp issues, but most shampoos offer "maintenance" by controlling symptoms. Chronic conditions like dry scalp often require ongoing care, including regular use of gentle products, balanced diet, and avoiding triggers. This shampoo helps manage symptoms but isn't a permanent solution, which is typical for over-the-counter products.
Common Questions About Shampoo and Scalp Care
How often should I wash my hair? For dry scalp, washing 2-3 times a week with a moisturizing shampoo can prevent over-drying. What ingredients should I avoid? Besides SLS, look out for alcohols and fragrances that might irritate. Can diet affect scalp health? Yes, hydration and nutrients like omega-3s support skin health. Is natural shampoo better for all hair types? It depends on individual sensitivity; patch testing is recommended. How can I reduce flaking? Use lukewarm water and avoid hot showers that strip moisture.
Additional Tips for Healthy Scalp
To complement shampoo use, consider scalp massages to improve blood flow, use conditioners focused on hydration, and protect hair from environmental stressors. If problems persist, consult a dermatologist to rule out conditions like psoriasis or eczema. Remember, consistency is key—results may take weeks to appear.
