Rosemary Tea Tree Mint Shampoo - Clarifying Shampoo for Build Up and Flakes with Deep Cleansing Peppermint Oil and Tea Tree Essential Oil for Dry Scalp Treatment - Paraben & Sulfate Free (16oz)

I don't understand why people are saying this doesn't sud. I was a bit worried. For me it produces bubbles and feels nearly like regular shampoo. It is not like wen. This will clean your hair and make it feel clean but you need to use conditioner afterwards because it does have the possibility of drying out your hair. That's a given for me since I'm AA but I figure not so for others.
I also recommend wash rinse repeat to get that really clean feeling. A little goes a long way with this one, I'm saying this as an AA with a lot of natural hair. I personally added some tea tree oil that I got from tdr joes (6.99) to it to make it more effective at getting rid of dandruff.
For me it worked for dandruff. But it would still come back after about a week. Much longer than before but still unwanted. So I decided to add 100% tea tree oil this this shampoo directly and to my conditioner. I figure with more frequent use, like at least twice a week, this could cure my dandruff problem which started when I got to my mid 20s. Plus I love the smell. It's not a nice and flowery smell but I kind of like the smell of sage. I would say it smells like herbs. The smell does go away after drying. Personally my hair smelled like tea tree oil more than the shampoo.
Introduction to Maple Holistics Tea Tree Shampoo
Maple Holistics Tea Tree Shampoo is a sulfate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free formula designed to nourish dry scalp and combat dandruff. It features pure rosemary and tea tree essential oils, with peppermint oil for a refreshing, clarifying experience. The product is ideal for all hair types, especially those with dry or irritated scalp conditions.
Key Ingredients and Their Benefits
Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree oil helps reduce dandruff-causing fungi and soothes an itchy, flaky scalp. In the customer review, the user found that adding extra 100% tea tree oil boosted the shampoo's effectiveness, keeping dandruff at bay for up to a week. This aligns with clinical evidence that tea tree oil can combat Malassezia, a common cause of dandruff.
Rosemary Oil: Stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth and reducing inflammation. It also provides a natural antimicrobial effect.
Peppermint Oil: Creates a cooling sensation during use, helps remove buildup, and adds a clarifying effect. The reviewer noted the shampoo felt almost like regular shampoo with bubbles, indicating mild surfactants that don't strip natural oils.
Sulfate-Free Formula: Many conventional shampoos use sulfates (e.g., SLS) that create heavy lather but can strip moisture from hair and scalp. This product uses gentle cleansing agents that clean without overdrying. The reviewer, however, experienced some dryness and emphasized the need for a conditioner, especially for African American (AA) hair which tends to be drier.
Using the Shampoo for Best Results
Based on the reviewer's experience, here are key tips: • Wash-Rinse-Repeat: The reviewer recommends a double wash for a thoroughly clean feeling, especially for natural or thick hair. • Conditioning is Crucial: Because the shampoo can be drying, always follow with a moisturizing conditioner. The user noted that despite being AA with natural hair, they always condition afterward to avoid dryness. • Boost with Tea Tree Oil: Adding a few drops of 100% tea tree oil directly into the shampoo (and even conditioner) significantly enhances dandruff control. The reviewer purchased additional oil from TJ Maxx for $6.99 and saw improved results. • Frequency: Use at least twice a week for consistent dandruff management. The reviewer found that dandruff returned after about a week without frequent use. • Small Amount Goes a Long Way: The product is concentrated; the reviewer with a lot of natural hair confirms that a little suffices for a full wash.
Understanding Dandruff and Dry Scalp
Dandruff is often caused by an overgrowth of yeast (Malassezia), sensitivity to hair products, or a dry scalp. The product's tea tree and peppermint oils work to reduce yeast, soothe irritation, and remove flakes. The reviewer explicitly mentions the dandruff issue started in their mid-20s, a common onset age. Unlike harsh medicated dandruff shampoos that may contain sulfates or coal tar, this natural formula offers a gentler approach. However, the sulfate-free nature means it may not produce as big a lather; the reviewer was pleasantly surprised that it still created bubbles. For those with extremely oily scalp, the clarifying effect may be sufficient, but for dry scalp, conditioning is necessary.
Product Specifications and Quality
The shampoo comes in an 8-ounce bottle (1.85 x 1.85 x 6.75 inches). Model number: tea-f70. It is not discontinued and has a best sellers rank of #33,308 in Beauty & Personal Care. With over 3,062 ratings and an average of 4.4 stars, it is well-regarded. Key attributes: • Scent: Tea Tree Shampoo (earthy, herbal, fades after drying as noted) • Hair Type: Dry • Age Range: All • No sulfates, parabens, or artificial fragrances • Cruelty-free and vegan ingredients.
Balancing Pros and Cons from the Review
Pros: Effective for dandruff when combined with extra tea tree oil; good lather for a sulfate-free shampoo; leaves hair feeling thoroughly clean; pleasant herbal scent that doesn't linger; good value due to concentrated formula; suitable for natural and textured hair with proper conditioning. Cons: Can be drying, especially for AA hair, so conditioner is mandatory; dandruff may return after a week even with extra oil; some users might find it not as moisturizing as needed; the scent is not flowery—some may dislike the sage-like herb smell. The reviewer's personal addition of tea tree oil highlights that the base formula alone may not be potent enough for stubborn dandruff, but it provides a clean slate for customization.
Comparison with Other Dandruff Shampoos
Unlike medicated shampoos containing ketoconazole or selenium sulfide, Maple Holistics relies on essential oils. This makes it a good option for those seeking natural, sulfate-free alternatives. However, severe dandruff cases may require clinical-strength products. The user mentioned discarding artificial dandruff shampoos with damaging sulfates, which aligns with the product's selling points. For mild to moderate dandruff, this product—especially with the reviewer's enhancement—can be an effective, non-irritating solution.
Final Recommendations
If you have dry scalp, dandruff, and value natural ingredients, this shampoo is worth trying. For best results, integrate an extra tea tree oil boost, always condition, and wash at least twice weekly. The reviewer's experience shows that with the right routine, you can achieve a clean, flake-free scalp for days. As with any hair product, patch test for allergies, and consult a dermatologist if dandruff persists. Incorporate this clarifying shampoo as part of a holistic hair care routine that includes moisturizing treatments for optimal hair health.
