I discovered Andalou shampoo eliminates frizz and defines my curly hair beautifully.
Andalou shampoo transformed my frizzy curls into soft, defined hair; it controls frizz, enhances waves, and has a divine scent, all from a cruelty-free brand I trust.
This is a review from Amazon.com about product:
Andalou Naturals Argan Oil & Shea Moisture Rich Shampoo, Orange, 11.5 Ounce

As you can see from the pic--which was taken this morning after washing and air-drying it last night (I've done nothing with it)--I have medium brown 3a/3b wavy-curly hair with loads of gray at the temples. The gray is less curly than the rest of my hair--and it's wiry and super frizzy. It's been coming in like gangbusters, so recently I began looking for a (cruelty-free) shampoo and conditioner that would tame the frizz without being too heavy and diminish the definition of my curls; I've tried several without any luck. But...Eureka! I believe I have found it in this shampoo and conditioner combo by Andalou. I had a feeling this would be it, because it was love at first try with the Andalou Shea Butter Lavender hand cream. That stuff pampers my dry, aging skin--and it smells heavenly. I often wear it in lieu of perfume. This company seems to just really work with my body chemistry.
A quick note about using the shampoo. Some folks in the reviews have complained it doesn't suds up enough, but it really does. The trick with this (and all sulfate-free shampoos) is to make sure your hair and your scalp are both completely soaked before putting the product in your hair; these sulfate-free formulas need lots of water to build up a sudsy head. Like most people, I use a hand held shower head and I spend a generous 5 minutes deliberately drenching my hair and scalp, holding the shower head close to my hair and even moving my hair up and out of the way to really shoot the water into the scalp area. If you're patient and do this first, then apply shampoo, you'll have all the lather you could possibly want, I promise.
In any event, I love the stuff and the conditioner too (another heavenly scent); my hair looks and feels better than ever. I'm so happy I've finally found two basic, essential hair care products that I really, really love--and the company that makes them is also 100% cruelty-free. Score!
P.S. I've added a "before" pic so you can get a very clear idea what I've been dealing with, up until now, in terms of frizz.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Curly Hair Types
Curly hair is classified into types like 3a and 3b, which refer to loose to tight spiral curls. In the review, the user has 3a/3b wavy-curly hair, meaning it has well-defined S-shaped curls that can be prone to frizz. Gray hair, as mentioned, often has a different texture—it can be wiry, less curly, and more frizzy due to reduced oil production and changes in protein structure. This makes it challenging to manage, requiring products that moisturize without weighing hair down.
What is Sulfate-Free Shampoo?
Sulfate-free shampoos, like the Andalou product reviewed, do not contain harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These sulfates can strip natural oils, leading to dryness and frizz, especially for curly or color-treated hair. Sulfate-free formulas are gentler, helping to maintain moisture and reduce irritation, but they may produce less lather, which is why proper application techniques are crucial for effectiveness.
How to Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo Effectively
As highlighted in the review, sulfate-free shampoos need ample water to create lather. To use them effectively, thoroughly soak your hair and scalp for several minutes before application. This allows the product to distribute evenly and cleanse without residue. Using a handheld showerhead can help target the scalp area. This method prevents the common issue of insufficient suds and ensures the shampoo works well for frizz control and curl definition.
Benefits of Frizz Control and Curl Definition
Frizz occurs when hair absorbs moisture from the air, causing the cuticle to swell. Products like Andalou shampoo help tame frizz by providing hydration and sealing the cuticle, often through ingredients like natural butters or oils. Curl definition is enhanced by formulas that add moisture without heaviness, preventing hair from looking flat or stringy. This leads to softer, more manageable hair that holds its shape better throughout the day.
Cruelty-Free and Scent in Hair Care
Cruelty-free means the product was not tested on animals, aligning with ethical consumer values. In the review, the user appreciates this aspect, as it adds to the product's appeal. Additionally, a pleasant scent, such as the heavenly fragrance mentioned, can improve the overall user experience, making hair care routines more enjoyable and potentially boosting mood. Natural scents from ingredients like lavender or shea butter are often used in such products for their calming effects.
Common Hair Care Questions and Tips
Many people wonder how often to wash curly hair—typically, 2-3 times a week is sufficient to avoid stripping natural oils. For frizz, avoid overwashing and use a wide-tooth comb when wet to prevent breakage. If you have gray or wiry hair, look for products with added proteins or humectants to improve texture. Always patch-test new shampoos to check for allergies, and consider using a conditioner after shampooing to lock in moisture and enhance results.
