Exederm shampoo stopped my toddler's itching, bringing eczema scalp relief and bath-time peace.
Exederm shampoo calmed my toddler's eczema scalp itching within 3 weeks. Combined with Organic Root Stimulator oils for instant relief, it's gentle but I wish the conditioner added more moisture for her African American hair.

Exederm Shampoo

My 2.5 year old daughter has Eczema. It breaks my heart to see her scratching. The doctors have not been very helpful with their recommendations. Lately her scalp has been an issue.
I saw the Exederm Cleansing Baby Bath 8 oz (237 g) on the shelf at CVS and decided to try it with her nightly baths. It was a blessing. So I decided to try this shampoo. We have been using it for about 3 weeks. So far it has been wonderful. I am so glad I purchased it.
I use the Exederm conditioner along with it. I am African American and I would like her hair to have more moisture and the conditioner doesn't seem to do that as much as other products would, but she is not scratching and that is the most important thing for me right now.
I must mention that I also use the Organic Root Stimulator Hairepair Vital Oils for Hair and Scalp, 4.3 Ounce on her scalp. I do believe this product used in combination with with Exederm has made the difference. On two occasions she started to scratch and I placed some on this in her hair parts and it calmed her down immediately.
I will purchase again.
Shampoo Basics & Tips
Understanding Childhood Eczema and Scalp Care
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition causing dryness, redness, and intense itching. In toddlers, scalp eczema often appears as flaky, crusty patches that trigger scratching, risking infection. Gentle shampoos like Exederm avoid sulfates, fragrances, and dyes that exacerbate flare-ups.
Hypoallergenic Shampoo Formulations Explained
Hypoallergenic shampoos minimize common irritants: sulfates (harsh cleansers), parabens (preservatives), and synthetic fragrances. Exederm uses mild surfactants that cleanse without stripping natural oils. For eczema-prone scalps, pH-balanced formulas (5.5-6.5) help maintain the skin's protective acid mantle.
Moisture Management for African American Hair
African American hair's coiled structure slows natural oil distribution, increasing dryness risk. While Exederm's conditioner prioritizes hypoallergenic safety over deep moisture, supplementing with oils like Organic Root Stimulator (containing olive/jojoba oils) provides occlusive sealing without clogging follicles or irritating eczema.
Scalp-Soothing Ingredients and Their Functions
Oils in products like Organic Root Stimulator act as emollients: coconut oil reduces inflammation, jojoba mimics skin's sebum, and olive oil reinforces the lipid barrier. For immediate itch relief during flare-ups, these oils create a protective layer that calms nerve endings.
Combination Therapy for Stubborn Eczema
Pairing a medicated shampoo with targeted treatments (like scalp oils) addresses multiple factors: cleansing irritants, reducing inflammation, and repairing the moisture barrier. Always patch-test combinations and apply oils to damp skin to lock in hydration after bathing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I wash an eczema-prone scalp? Limit to 2-3 times weekly with lukewarm water to prevent overdrying. Follow immediately with moisturizer.
Can diet affect scalp eczema? Common triggers include dairy, eggs, or nuts - consult an allergist if itching persists despite topical care.
When to see a dermatologist? If scratching causes bleeding, oozing, or hair loss, prescription treatments like topical corticosteroids may be needed.
Are "natural" shampoos better for eczema? Not always - botanical extracts can still irritate. Prioritize clinically tested, fragrance-free formulas over marketing claims.
